Ukiyo-e Mashup Cards

This collection contains 10 note cards and envelopes that playfully embellish upon the Ukiyo-e print. upon the design elements of the traditional Japanese Kimono.

浮世絵 (ukiyo-e) translates to “pictures of the floating world” and refers to a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Artists of the time depicted Kabuki actors, Geisha, Samurai, Sumo wrestlers, folktales and travel scenes with mass produced woodblock prints.

Each of the 10 cards displays a 21st century image which remixes a diversity of historical and cultural iconography with a primary Ukiyo-e source.
